Both the Witte de Withstraat and the Westelijk Handelsterrein plus it surroundings are the places to stroll for a restaurant. The first is at walking distance of the WTC, the Westelijk Handelsterrein is an old warehouse full of restaurants located at Van Vollenhovenstraat 15. It is about 1.5 km from the WTC. Take a cab or take the tram 5 direction Willemsplein.


De Zwethheul. The restaurant took over the souschef of Parkheuvel, former best restaurant in town. Located outside of the city in an old farm at the foot of a canal dike: inside you get the feeling the cargo boat could sail onto your plate. Two stars. Take cab (if you eat here, you can afford it) to the small country village of ‘De Zweth’. Rotterdamseweg 480. +31 (0) 10 4704166. Closed on Monday

La Vilette. Behind a massive concrete façade, good food at reasonable prices. Walking distance from WTC. Westblaak 160. +31 (0) 10 4143391. Closed on Sunday

De Engel. Brasserie style. A place were old money and noveau rich mingle. Famous for its meat: take the ‘weide rund’. Eendrachtsweg 19. +31 (0)10 4138256. Closed on Sunday and Monday

Zeezout. Fish. Westerkade 11b, 10 minutes walk further than “Westelijk Handelsterrein”. +31 (0)10 436 50 49. Closed on Sunday and Monday


Oliva. Benchmark restaurant in terms of value for money, especially the menu. Italian country style, without the pizza. Walking distance from WTC. Witte de Withstraat 15 A. +31 (0) 4121413. Open all week

Rosso. It looks like it is called and it is beautiful: something to take your wife to, or something not to tell your wife about. Van Vollenhovenstraat 15 (Westelijk Handelsterrein). +31 (0) 10 2250705. Closed on Sunday and Monday

Huson. New in town. Modern interieur. Avoid place near the door as you get blown away. Small, so make a reservation. Scheepstimmermanslaan 14: oppositie of the Westelijk Handelsterrein. +31 (0)10 4130371. Closed on Saturday and in the summer (?) on Sunday

Asian Glories. If you do not want the classic Chinese, but oriental 'French style'. Arround the corner of the World trade Center. Leeuwenstraat 15. +31 (0) 10 4117107. Closed on Wednesday


Gusto. Cheap version of Oliva, a little bit further down the road. Pizza and other nice Italian starters. Schiedamse Vest 40. +31 (0)10 2800812. Closed on Sunday

La Pizza. As above, but near Westelijk Handelsterrein. Scheepstimmermanslaan 21. +31 (0)10 2417797. Open all week

Schieland Eetcafé. From the WTC, go the north, just at the other side of the railroad (500 meters from there). Good pub food. The Irish Burgers are very nice at this welcome place. Schiekade 770. +31 (0)10 4659546

De Unie. Exterior is replicate of the original Mondriaan style café boomed during the war.  If you can 'resist' the gay service, nice option for (non pizza) Italian food. Nearby, at the Mauritsweg 34 (at the canal toward the railway station) +31 (0) 10 4117394. Closed on Sunday and Monday

Bla Bla. For years an anchor point for vegetarians. No burden for carnivores either. Piet Heynsplein 35 in Delfshaven, in the west side of town. Take cab or line tram 4 to Marconiplein or metro, and get out at Delfshaven. +31 (0) 10 477 44 48. Closed at Monday and Tuesday

At the Witte de Withstraat (see also above) there are a number of 'fluorescent tube' oriental eat houses: all good and cheap and the place for a after might night meal


Eating with groups without reservation in Holland is a hassle. China town in front of the railway station is a safe option. Recommended: Hong Kong, Westersingel 15 (the canal toward the railway station)


Cafe De Ridder. Mauritsweg 28 (the canal toward the railway station). Small, cozy, young and old open for conversation. Closed on Sunday

Wester Pavilioen. Notorious for it laid back service, but nevertheless a well-known  meeting place for years. '. Newspapers, apple pie and bier are ok. Reasonable food till late. Also good pace for breakfast. Halfway the Nieuwe Binnenweg (number 136). Open all week

Toaster. Pannekoekstraat 38a. Good place for a drink, relaxed atmosphere.  Serve a variety of toasties, but other simple food is available too

Loos. Westplein 1. Grand café with large windows overlooking the picturesque Veerhaven. Near Westelijk Handelsterrein



JC121. Good for a fashionable conventional hair cut, reasonable prices. Nieuwe Binnenweg 162 b. + 31 (0)10 2122212. Open on Monday till 18:00, otherwise 20:00 and 21:00. Serves both sexes

Kinky Kappers. Good for a fashionable unconventional hair cut, reasonable prices. Nieuwe Binnenweg 120, near Wester Paviljoen. +31 (0) 10 4366602. Open: unclear, just pretend you always get your hair done at 10 in the evening… The creation with the scissors is the probably the ' coiffeur'

Other essentials

Tourist Information Center. Is called the VVV, in the Hilton Hotel building across the street of the city hall. +31 (0)10 2051500

Icecream. Try the sympathetic ice cream salon Venezia  Oude Binnenweg 125

Shopping. The better shops are located in the Van Oldebarneveldstraat / Karel Doorman straat / Oude Binnenweg / Nieuwe  Binnenweg /  Witte de With straat. In the Lijnbaan /  'Koopgoot' area you will find the more common stores. The Bijenkorf and HEMA are famous Dutch warehouses, of which the Bijenkorf is better suited for chique essentials and HEMA for true essentials (panties, sewing belongings, stroopwafels, rookworst)

What’s on:. NL10 magazine. If you want to know what is currently on @ the musea / galleries / nightclubs, try to find the NL10 magazine (in Dutch). This free magazine is offered in casing on the street and in several shops/ cafes



Do not miss the Museumpark: the three large Rotterdam Musea are there and they are all three fine: Museum Boymans: top collection from classic, to pop art to post pop. Netherlands Architecture Institute: the building is superb: try to get a guided tour inside the archives. In the back of the park: De Kunsthal. Several smaller galleries are located in the Witte de With straat (TENT, MAMA, MKgalerie)


Go to Delft instead. Take slow or fast train (but not the intercity) to Amsterdam, but get out at this mini canal town. Just 15 minutes from the Central Station


You are probably closer then you ever get to the best place to see Dutch windmills. Just outside Rotterdam, there is the small town of Kinderdijk, build on the bottom of a lake, if not for the 19 windmills build in the 17th century which pumped the water out. For unclear reasons all 19 are still out there. Vistit the Tourist Information center  to get a boat trip or take metro to Zuidplein and then bus 90 to Kinderdijk

Pathe Schouwburg pleinNot to miss building located at the Schouwburg plein.  Not always the best movies movies (popular assortment), but definitely the best screens and seating


Dizzy Jazz Café: Live Jazz, free entree and no tricks with increasing beer prices as at 10:00 the music starts. Before that reasonable dinners. Monday the 2nd of April: "Open Jazzsession". Tuesday the 3rd of April: Wim Bronnenberg Connected featuring John Ruocco. Wednesday the 4th of April: Leslie Nielsen featuring the The Page 3 Horns. Rotown. Alternative pop music: many famous played here (U2 for instance), before they became famous. The food is reasonable, but also not yet famous. Sunday the 1st of April: The Aliens (€ 7.00). Monday the 2nd of April: Air Traffic (€ 9.00). Band should be starting at 21:30. Nieuwe Binnenweg 17-19

Plato. A fine place to buy the latest music. Meent 116, in fact around the corner, still in the WTC building
